Frequently Asked Questions

A heating engineer is a professional responsible for installing, maintaining and repairing heating systems across a variety of building types. They work hard to ensure these systems run efficiently, providing comfort and safety to people within the structures they manage. Heating engineers also ensure compliance with safety regulations, conducting regular safety inspections and implementing preventative safety measures. Scheduled maintenance and prompt repair work are key tasks that a heating engineer undertakes to ensure the efficient working of heating systems. They are skilled at diagnosing issues and taking rapid action to rectify them, this includes knowledge of installation, maintenance and troubleshooting varied heating systems.

Using a qualified, certified heating engineer will give you peace of mind that your property has a heating system that is safe, efficient and provides the comfort you need.

On average, 20% of boilers break down every year not because of age but because of central heating sludge. If your heating system isn’t maintained as well as it should be, and a cleanse isn’t carried out when it’s needed, the water in the central heating system will eventually become contaminated with rust which combines with dirt to become a thick gooey liquid. This can result in blockages in pipes, settle in the bottom of radiators or eventually block or damage important components such as the heat exchanger, which can be expensive to fix. A system cleanse will help remove internal build up and sludge, so that your boiler will continue to work well and heat your home effectively. Your Gas safe engineer will be able to test your heating system and assess if you need a system flush and which method would be best for you. We always recommend that you have a system flush during a new boiler installation to flush out any built-up dirt and rust in the pipework and radiators left behind from the old boiler.

A heating engineer plays a vital role in the construction and maintenance sector. Using their in-depth knowledge of heating systems, they not only install new systems but also diagnose and repair faults in existing ones. They have extensive knowledge of various technologies used in heating systems, and they use this knowledge to offer solutions that are both efficient and cost-effective. The primary role of a heating engineer is the installation of heating systems. A heating engineer can assess a property, conduct a heat loss survey, plan the routing of pipework, placement and type of heating required for each space.

Chemical flush. Chemicals are put into the central heating system and are then left to circulate as the central heating is running. After a while (preferably a few days), the engineer returns and the system is then flushed, the old water is replaced with new clean water and Rust Inhibitor is added to the water to help protect your boiler and metallic components from rust in the future. A Chemical cleanse is the cheapest of all the options, after assessing the water quality and any other heating issues the engineer will advise you as to whether this will be best for you. This can only be achieved with a working boiler.

MagnaCleanse. The MagnaCleanse is a high-tech cleansing method. The MagnaCleanse machine is connected to your heating system, and using powerful magnetic filters which attract the debris, your system is cleaned efficiently and quickly. This is a more expensive option but is more effective than a chemical cleanse so would be suitable for older systems and problems with cold areas on radiators. The boiler needs to be working to MagnaCleanse the heating system.
There is also a magnetic filter that can be installed, called a Magna Clean, it is fitted to the pipework near your boiler to filter the water before it enters the boiler. This protects the boiler from build up debris, which could result in your heating system becoming inefficient. We recommend this as a preventative measure to help keep debris from entering the boiler and damaging components.

Power Flush. A Power Flush is very effective at dislodging sludge from your system. The boiler does not need to be working, so it can be done when replacing an old broken-down boiler. A machine with a pump is attached to the system and water, along with chemicals, is flushed at high pressure through the pipework. The Radiators are vibrated to loosen any build up in them. It takes up to ten hours to complete so is the dearest option, but our engineer will advise if this is the most suitable option for you.
